Engineering and Shelving Design

Talked with our interior designer, Stan Royer, over the phone today about his meeting with the civil engineer.   Stan said the engineer believes we will probably need some additional footings under the interior wall we want to open up as well as a bigger header above the wall.   Using the shelving units as structural elements seems too complicated at this point, so we will have to assume that the shelving units are not part of the structure.

The engineer can use the drawings I did with Chief Architect, but the city will likely require better drawings.   The engineer said he would charge $600 for the engineering work and an additional $600 to create better drawings.   I will meet with Stan on Tuesday to make a decision on which engineer we are going to use for the job.

I responded to Paul Mirocha, the furniture maker, on Custom Made today regarding his proposal for the design and fabrication of the shelving units.   His price on the project including installation is $5200.   I am concerned about starting this work and then not being able to do construction until possibly next summer, so I proposed that we break the project up into a design phase and fabrication phase.   We can do some preliminary design work, mostly sketches, now and I can work this into the design.   Then we can move on to the detailed design and fabrication phase when we have a firm date for when we will start construction.
